Part A: Reading Test
Read the passage and answer questions no. 1 and 2.
May Day or International Workers' Day is observed on May 1 all over the world today to commemorate the historical struggle and sacrifices of the working people to establish an eight-hour workday. It is a public holiday in almost all the countries of the world. Since the Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe and the US, the workers in mills and factories had been working a long shift, fourteen or even more hours a day.
On May 1st in 1886, inspired by the trade unions, half of the workers at the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company in Chicago went on strike demanding an eight-hour workday. Two days later, a workers' rally was held near the McCormick Harvester Machine Company and about 6000 workers' joined it. The rally was addressed by the labour leaders. They urged the workers to stand together, to go on with their struggle and not to give in to their bosses. At one point of the rally, some strike breakers started leaving the meeting place. The strikers went down the street to bring them back. Suddenly about 200 policemen attacked them with clubs and revolvers. One striker was killed instantly, five or six others were seriously wounded and many others were injured.
The events of May 1, 1886 are a reminder that workers will continue to be exploited until they stand up and speak out to gain better working conditions, better pay and better lives.

Air pollution comes from a wide variety of sources. In Bangladesh poisonous exhausts from industrial plants, brick kilns, old or poorly serviced vehicles and dust from roads and construction sites are some of the major sources of air pollution. We can minimise this type of pollution by making less use of motor vehicles and avoiding the use of vehicles older than 20 years. We may also use proper lubricants to lessen the level of emission and pollutants. We can encourage people to use Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) or Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) for fuelling their cars. The government may relocate hazardous industries like brick kilns to areas away from human habitations.

A School Magazine
A school magazine is a publication that reflects the activities, achievements, and creative works of the students of a school. It is usually published once a year. It helps students share their talents and ideas. The name of our school magazine is “The Horizon”. The magazine committee is formed by selecting a group of teachers and students who are responsible for collecting articles, editing them, and designing the magazine. Students from different classes contribute their writings, poems, stories, drawings, and reports on various school activities. The magazine contains a variety of things such as academic achievements, sports reports, cultural programs, essays, poems, and illustrations made by students. It also includes messages from the principal and teachers, which encourage students to develop their skills. The school magazine is very important because it motivates students to be creative and express their thoughts. It also helps in improving writing skills and builds confidence among students. King Midas and the Golden Touch
Once upon a time, there was a king called Midas. He was very rich and he always longed for(আশা করত) more riches. Moreover, he was fond of gold though he had a lot of it. One day, a mysterious stranger appeared before him and offered to grant him a special wish. Without thinking much, King Midas said, “I wish that everything I touch should turn into gold.” The stranger nodded and told him that his wish would be granted.
At first, Midas was very happy. He touched a flower, and it immediately turned into gold. He touched a fruit, and it also became gold. But soon, he realized that his wish was a curse. When he tried to eat, the food turned into gold in his hands. Even the water in the cup changed to gold, and he could not drink. Worst of all, when he hugged his beloved daughter, she too turned into a golden statue. Midas became very astonished and cried for help. The stranger returned and told him to wash his hands in a magical river to remove the golden touch. Midas did as he was told, and finally, the gold disappeared. He hugged his daughter and promised never to be greedy again. From that day, King Midas learned that love and happiness are more valuable than gold.

A dialogue between me and my friend about the importance of early rising.
Fardin: Good morning, Robin! You look very tired today. Did you sleep well last night?
Robin: Good morning, Fardin. Not really. I went to bed very late, and now I feel extremely drowsy.
Fardin: I can see that. You know, staying up late and waking up late is a bad habit. It can affect your health, studies, and daily routine.
Robin: I know, but I always feel sleepy in the mornings, and it’s hard to get out of bed.
Fardin: That’s why you should try to rise early. Early rising has many advantages. For one, it helps your body and mind stay fresh and active. People who wake up early often feel more energetic throughout the day.
Robin: But I don’t see how it affects my studies.
Fardin: Waking up early gives you extra time to study in a calm and quiet environment. It improves concentration and memory, so you can perform better in school. Also, early risers are more disciplined and can manage their time efficiently.
Robin: Oh, I didn’t realize that. I just thought it was tiring to wake up early.
Fardin: Actually, it becomes easy if you go to bed on time. Sleeping early and rising early keeps your body clock balanced. It also improves digestion, strengthens immunity, and makes you less prone to illnesses.
Robin: Wow! I had no idea early rising could help with health too.
Fardin: Yes, Robin. Besides health and studies, early risers are usually more cheerful and positive. They can plan their day better, finish tasks on time, and even enjoy some quiet morning hours for reading or exercise.
Robin: That sounds really good. I think I should change my habit.
Fardin: Absolutely! Start by sleeping 15–30 minutes earlier each night and gradually try to wake up early. Soon, you will feel more energetic and active, and it will become a natural habit.
Robin: Thank you, Fardin! I will follow your advice and try to rise early from tomorrow.
Fardin: That’s great, Robin! I am sure you will feel healthier, happier, and more successful if you make early rising a habit.
