Changing Sentences: Simple, Complex, and Compound
1. Finite vs. Non-Finite Verbs
এই টপিকের জন্য সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ স্কিল হলো—একটি Finite Verb ঝটপট চিনে ফেলার ক্ষমতা।
Finite Verb কী? Finite Verb হলো একটি sentence এর "ইঞ্জিন" (Engine)। এটি প্রধানত দুটি কাজ করে:
- এটি বাক্যের Tense বা কাল (Present, Past, Future) প্রকাশ করে।
- এটি Subject-এর সাথে match করে (যেমন: I play, He plays, They played)।
Finite Verb-এর কিছু উদাহরণ:
- He went to the store. (Past tense)
- She is sleeping. (Present continuous)
- They will win the match. (Future tense)
Non-Finite Verb কী? একটি Non-Finite Verb দেখতে action word-এর মতোই, কিন্তু এটি বাক্যের Tense প্রকাশ করে না এবং বাক্যের মূল engine হিসেবেও কাজ করে না। Grammar tests-এ সাধারণত দুই ধরনের Non-Finite Verb সবচেয়ে বেশি দেখা যায়:
- Present Participles / Gerunds (Verb + ing): playing, walking, seeing, going
- Infinitives (To + Base Verb): to play, to walk, to see, to go
Examples যেগুলো difference প্রকাশ করে:
- Walking down the street, I saw my friend. (এখানে "Walking" হলো non-finite; "saw" হলো finite engine).
- He wants to eat pizza. (এখানে 'Wants' হলো Finite engine; আর 'to eat' হলো Non-finite).
- Closing the door, she went outside. (এখানে 'Closing' হলো Non-finite; আর 'went' হলো Finite engine).
2. তিনটি Sentence-এর প্রকারভেদ চেনা
একটি বাক্যের Finite Verb-গুলো count করতে পারলেই sentence-টি কোন প্রকারের (Simple, Complex নাকি Compound) তা চিনে ফেলা একদম সহজ হয়ে যাবে!
1.Simple Sentence:
- এটিতে কেবল একটিই main subject এবং একটিই finite verb থাকে।
- এখানে কোনো joining conjunction (যেমন: and, but, because) থাকে না।
- অতিরিক্ত তথ্য দেওয়ার জন্য এটি কোনো নতুন engine যোগ না করে কেবল non-finite verb (যেমন: -ing বা to যুক্ত শব্দ) ব্যবহার করে।
- Example 1: The boy went to the market to buy some books. (এখানে finite verb: went আর non-finite: to buy).
- Example 2: Seeing the police, the thief ran away. (এখানে finite verb: ran আর non-finite: Seeing).
2.Compound Sentence:
- এটিতে দুইটি (বা তার বেশি) finite verb থাকে।
- Sentence এর এই দুটি অংশ coordinating conjunctions দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকে, যা খুব সহজেই FANBOYS শব্দটি দিয়ে মনে রাখা যায়: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.
- Example 1: The boy went to the market, and he bought some books. (এখানে দুইটি finite verbs: went এবং bought. এগুলো যুক্ত হয়েছে conjunction “and” দিয়ে)।
- Example 2: The thief saw the police, and he ran away. (এখানে দুইটি finite verbs: saw এবং ran. এগুলো যুক্ত হয়েছে conjunction “and” দিয়ে)।
3.Complex Sentence:
- এটিতে দুইটি (বা তার বেশি) finite verb থাকে।
- বাক্যের এই দুটি অংশ একটি Subordinating Conjunction দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকে। এগুলো হলো এমন কিছু শব্দ যেমন: As, Since, Because, If, Though, Although, When, While, Who, Which, That, So that, Unless.
- Example 1: He went to the market so that he could buy some books. (এখানে দুটি finite verb: went এবং could buy. এগুলো যুক্ত হয়েছে “so that” দিয়ে)।
- Example 2: As soon as the thief saw the police, he ran away. (এখানে দুটি finite verb: saw এবং ran. এগুলো যুক্ত হয়েছে “As soon as” দিয়ে)।
পরীক্ষার জন্য "Family" Trick
"Simple to Complex" আর "Complex to Compound"—এভাবে আলাদা আলাদা তালিকা মুখস্থ করার কোনো দরকার নেই।
